At Jyrkkä in Sonkajärvi, you can experience some of the atmosphere of the 19th century at a former ironworks' village. The village of Jyrkkä, Ruukin Tupa and its setting is a unique combination of Finnish rural industrial history and wide-ranging tourism services. Learn about the history of the local ironworks on the shore of the rapids, hike on the Volokki trail or stay in one of the two fine log cabins that were built in 2019. The new facilities are also excellent for meetings and occupational wellbeing events. Jyrkkä is located between the lakes Kiltuanjärvi and Haapajärvi, on the shore of Jyrkkäkoski rapids, a 45 min drive from the town of Iisalmi. The area offers a wide range of hiking, canoeing and fishing opportunities.

The owner of Ruukin Tupa, Henri Jauhiainen, is one of Kuopio's European Region of Gastronomy Food Ambassadors and is specialised in game dishes. Ruukin Tupa's year-round services include accommodation, food and catering services as well as wilderness meals, a wood-heated sauna and hot tub rental. Conference facilities and activity programmes are also available.
